Nach 5 Jahren und 136 Konzerten veranstalten wir am 23ten September in der Alten Feuerwache Köln das eintägige
5 JAHRE NACHTJOURNAL FESTIVAL. Das Programm steht und wir freuen uns auf Tony Buck & Magda Mayas, Andy Moor & Christine Sehnaoui, Yutaka Makino und die Finnin Kuupuu.

Zeitgleich erscheint auf unserem Label die compilation NACHTJOURNAL 2009 mit einer Auswahl der Saison 2009. Auf der CD sind Mitschnitte folgender Formationen: Multibass Orchester, Eli Keszler, Gino Robair/Lu Hübsch/Birgit Ulher, Germ Studies (Cooper, Abrahams), Flickr (Vorfeld, Böttcher), Miya Masaoka, Abattoir (Chen,van Heumen), Institut für Feinmotorik, Adachi Tomomi & dj sniff, Pirx, Ignatz, Koro (Dr. Borg, Präsident, Rupp) und Core of the Coalman.

After 5 years and 136 concerts of the concert-series NACHTJOURNAL we are going to celebrate this on sep 23rd at Alte Feuerwache Köln in form of the one-day-festival 5 JAHRE NACHTJOURNAL FESTIVAL.

Die Konzertreihe für experimentelle Musik NACHTJOURNAL existiert seit 2005 und fand urspünglich wöchentlich im Café JOURNAL statt. Zahlreiche Musiker aus der experimentellen-, elektronischen-, improvisierten- sowie Neue Musik - Szene prägen das Format. Seit 2008 wird NACHTJOURNAL von der Stadt Köln sowie der SK Stiftung Kultur gefördert. 2009 rumorte NACHTJOURNAL monatlich im Tsunami Club sowie im RAKETENKLUB Köln.

The concerseries for experimental music NACHTJOURNAL exists since 2005 and found it´s origins weekly at the Café JOURNAL. Numerous musicians from the Experimental-, Electronic-, Improvised-, Contemporary Music-Scene influenced the format. Since 2008 NACHTJOURNAL is funded by the City of Cologne as well as the SK Stiftung Kultur. In 2009 NACHTJOURNAL took place monthly at the TSUNAMI or the RAKETENKLUB in Cologne.

KUUPUU (Finnland, Dekorder)
Kuupuu is a solo project of Finnish artist and musician Jonna Karanka. Kuupuu plays partly improvised spooky boogie with tapes, loops, toys, casios, effects and voices. Her live sets are time travels through unfound galaxies, deserted huts, nightmares, dirty doghouses, sweet cakes and cranberry lakes - letting the melodies find their own ways and settle or unsettle in the whole.

YUTAKA MAKINO (computer)
The work of YUTAKA MAKINO, born 1976 in Japan, deals with human perception and dynamic systems for spatiotemporal constructions of abstract environments with ephemeral entities. His research operates among art, science and philosophy. He presented his works internationally and has had extended residencies in the MacDowell Colony (USA), STEIM (The Netherlands), Visby International Center for Composers (Sweden) or Technical University Berlin (Germany). He has been received prizes and grants from Prix Ton Bruynl (The Netherlands), DAAD Berliner KÜnstlerprogramm (Germany), Agency of Cultural Affairs (Japan), Pola Art Foundation (Japan) among others and commissions from Foundation Ton Bruynl (The Netherlands), STRP Festival (The Netherlands) and DAAD Berliner KÜnstlerprogramm. With the turntablist Takuro Mizuta Lippit alias dj sniff of STEIM, he performs as "audile".
He founded the independent computer music label "strukto"

TONY BUCK (drums)
Tony is regarded as one of Australia's most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. He has been involved in a highly diverse array of projects but is probably best known around the world as a member of the trio The Necks. Following studies and early experience in Australia he spent time in Japan, where he formed PERIL with Otomo Yoshihide and Kato Hideki before relocating to Europe in the mid-nineties. Some of the more high profile projects he has been involved with include the band Kletka Red, and touring and recording with, among others, The EX, The Exiles, and Corchestra, and involvement with most of the international improvisation and new music community and festivals. He also creates video works for use with live music performance and has had pieces shown in Tokyo, Belfast, Berlin, New York and Sydney. Current projects include long standing duos with Axel Doerner and Magda Mayas; New York based trios "Glacial" (with David Watson and Lee Renaldo); "The Fell Clutch" (with Ned Rothenberg, Stomu Takeshi and David Tronzo); Berlin based "Heaven And" and "Asiplusband (with Asi Foecker and Andy Moor) and "project/TRANSMIT" (a guitar driven post-rock project based in Sydney and Berlin)

MAGDA MAYAS (piano)
Magda Mayas is a pianist and curator living in Berlin, Germany since 1999. Mayas studied jazz and improvisation in Berlin and Amsterdam. During this time she began developing a specific set of techniques for inside- piano performance. Mayas has concentrated her musical investigations on the piano and its sonic possibilities, utilizing extended techniques, amplification and preparations as a process of abstraction, whilst focusing on the physicality of both internal and external parts of the piano. As a continuation of this research Mayas founded the festival "Tasten-Berliner Klaviertage". Since 2009 she has also been performing on a clavinet/pianet, an electronic keyboard with strings and metal chimes from the 60s, exploring its internal parts as well as using it with various electronic effects. Mayas performs internationally in a variety of roles as interpreter, solo and in collaboration with a large number of musicians and composers. Over the years Mayas has performed and toured in Europe, the USA, Australia and Lebanon with many leading figures in improvisation such as Andy Moore, John Butcher, Peter Evans, Axel DÖrner and many more.

ANDY MOOR (guitar)
Andy Moor Born in London England 1962 Andy began his musical life in Edinburgh, Scotland playing guitar with the band Dog Faced Hermans, a multi faceted eclectic group that mixed energetic post punk energy with traditional tunes and improvisations ... In 1990 he moved to the Netherlands after an invitation to join Dutch band The Ex and continues to be a full time member of this band ... the openess and versatility of the musicians in this group has brought them into contact with many musicians from different scenes and backgrounds..including Tom Cora (cello), Han Bennink (drums), Wolter Wierbos (trombone), Djibril Diabate (kora), John Butcher (sax) and Anne james Chaton (sound poet). In '95 he performed his first series of completely improvised concerts as a duet with Terrie Ex. ... ...

CHRISTINE SEHNAOUI (saxophone)
Born in 1978 and living in France, Christine is from lebanese origins. It is with the discovering of improvised music in 1997 that Christine Sehnaoui decided to start her own autodidact study of sound experimentation on the alto saxophone. She creates a personal language on how to make electronic music on an acoustic instrument. Far away from narrative or dramatic music, her music tries to deal with the relation between listening and the concept of perception, time and space. With deep sensitivity, she develops extended techniques and complex patterns, exploring the microtonal aspects of the saxophone or the high-pitched tone. She produces nifty tonguing tricks, unpitched breaths, spittle-flecked growls, biting, slicing notes or breathy echoey sounds from the bell of her horn. Her main musical partners include Sharif Sehnaoui, Michel Waisvisz, Stephane Rives, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Zerang and many others. Besides, since 2001, she contibutes to develop impovisation in her country of origins, Lebanon, where she co-organizes the annual festival of improvised music in Lebanon, called "Irtijal" and works in an independent DVD label of experimental cinema "LOWAVE"

DAS GERÄUSCH DER HUMMELN

Vier Kontrabassisten bestritten das Auftaktkonzert im Tsunami-Club, dem neuen Domizil für die Südstadt-Konzertreihe NACHTJOURNAL.

INNENSTADT - Wie Urviecher liegen vier Kontrabässe da, sie füllen die ganze Breite im Tsunami-Club. Sie sind die einzigen Instrumente im Kölner „Multibass Orchester“, sie allein werden den dunkelroten schmalen Kellerraum zum Vibrieren bringen. Ganz schön abgefahren, ein derart monochromes Ensemble. Es kommt diesmal auch ohne Strom aus.

Demonstrativ beginnt das Ganze mit einem einzigen sonoren Zupfton - mal vier. Tastend kommt ein zweiter, ein dritter Ton hinzu. Mal klatschen die Saiten aufs Griffbrett, mal erzeugen vier über die Saiten rutschende Bögen das Geräusch von Sirenen. Oder man hört (im Flageolettspiel) wie von fern helle Flötchen, die sich in eine Horde verschreckter Hummeln verwandeln.

Im Forte markieren die Bässe auch mal ein sattes Motorengeräusch, das in die Höhe abhebt. Überraschend auch, wie im Verlauf einer Improvisation ganz allmählich ein Schlagzeugquartett entsteht. Die Musiker betupfen ihre Bässe, trommeln, klopfen, und immer deutlicher formieren sich rhythmische Schichten. Fabelhaft. Manchmal kommt Swing ins Spiel. Seltener geht es um Melodien. Mal hört man eine kleine Mittelstimme, mal bringt die Andeutung eines Liedchens Bewegung ins Unterholz. Oder Fuhr gibt ein trauriges Halbtonmotiv vor, und die anderen steigen mit wachsender Begeisterung darauf ein.

Das Kölner „Multibass Orchester“ bot den würdigen Auftakt im neuen Domizil der Südstadt-Konzerte NACHTJOURNAL. Diese von Marion Wörle und Maciej Sledziecki seit Jahren betreute Reihe für experimentelle Musik wird am 5. März fortgesetzt, dann geben Audrey Chen (Cello, Stimme) und Robert van Heumen (Laptop) ein Konzert im Tsunami-Club.

NACHTJOURNALS Improvisationsmusik bedient sich sehr souverän der Elektronik, hat keine Berührungsängste gegenüber den Pop-Szenen, der Performance- und Medien-Kunst oder auch dem klassischen Jazz, ist aber keinesfalls eklektizistisch. Es ist Musik, die aus einem grossen Fundus an Traditionen und Klangforschungen schöpft und die dies mit einer Unbekümmertheit tut, die in Köln fast schon vergessen war.

Im Rahmen der wichtigen Experimental-Reihe NACHTJOURNAL ist der Schlagzeuger, Elektroniker und Komponist Gino Robair am Start. Anfang der 90er Jahre stand er auch hierzulande vor dem Durchbruch, ein führender Musiker seiner Szene zu werden - die Liste der Leute mit denen er auftrat und Platten veröffentlichte, ist beeindruckend: Anthony Braxton, Otomo Yoshihide, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, ROVA Saxophone Quartet oder auch Tom Waits finden sich da. Aber in den letzten Jahren ist es deutlich stiller um Robair geworden, liegt vielleicht einfach bloß an der Ignoranz vieler europäischer Veranstalter, die ihn nicht mehr eingeladen haben.

Mal hört man eine kleine Mittelstimme, mal bringt die Andeutung eines Liedchens Bewegung ins Unterholz. Oder Fuhr gibt ein trauriges Halbtonmotiv vor, und die anderen steigen mit wachsender Begeisterung darauf ein. Das Kölner „Multibass Orchester“ bot den würdigen Auftakt im neuen Domizil der Südstadt-Konzerte NACHTJOURNAL. Diese von Marion Wörle und Maciej Sledziecki seit Jahren betreute Reihe für experimentelle Musik wird am 5. März fortgesetzt, dann geben Audrey Chen (Cello, Stimme) und Robert van Heumen (Laptop) ein Konzert im Tsunami-Club. Marianne Kierspel, KÖLNER STADTANZEIGER:17.02.09 NACHTJOURNALS Improvisationsmusik bedient sich sehr souverän der Elektronik, hat keine Berührungsängste gegenüber den Pop-Szenen, der Performance- und Medien-Kunst oder auch dem klassischen Jazz, ist aber keinesfalls eklektizistisch. Es ist Musik, die aus einem grossen Fundus an Traditionen und Klangforschungen schöpft und die dies mit einer Unbekümmertheit tut, die in Köln fast schon vergessen war. Felix Klopotek / NOZART Di, 11.3.08 - Gino Robair EXPERIMENT Im Rahmen der wichtigen Experimental-Reihe NACHTJOURNAL ist der Schlagzeuger, Elektroniker und Komponist Gino Robair am Start. Anfang der 90er Jahre stand er auch hierzulande vor dem Durchbruch, ein führender Musiker seiner Szene zu werden - die Liste der Leute mit denen er auftrat und Platten veröffentlichte, ist beeindruckend: Anthony Braxton, Otomo Yoshihide, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, ROVA Saxophone Quartet oder auch Tom Waits finden sich da. Aber in den letzten Jahren ist es deutlich stiller um Robair geworden, liegt vielleicht einfach bloß an der Ignoranz vieler europäischer Veranstalter, die ihn nicht mehr eingeladen haben.
